To protect the table on your milling machine cut out a couple of pieces of either paneling, or stiff carpet tile. Place them so they cover the table to the left and right of your vice.
I have seen several tables that have numerous small "ding" marks and tiny dents - all cause by carelessly tossing a tool, wrench etc. on the bare table.
Keep it covered and keep it smooth, enjoy your shop.
